The Neolithic monuments of England consist of the famous stone circles (Stonehenge being the best-known and most dramatic example), barrows, and earthworks. All were present at the first stop on my summer travel fellowship, Avebury. The town of Avebury actually lies inside the largest stone circle in England, whose huge stones are now imposing residents in the local sheep fields. Nearby the circle is Silbury Hill, the largest man-made hill in Europe. Dated to around 2660 B.C., it is taller than any of the Cahokia mounds in the United States and indeed is larger than some of the lesser Egyptian pyramids. Until recently, its slopes were open to the public, and the numerous tunnels dug by industrious 19th century archaeologists are still visible through the weeds. Further along the path from Avebury to Silbury is the West Kennet Long Barrow, one of the largest and best preserved Neolithic burial chambers in England.
