The farm at Borg is one of the oldest in Iceland; it was here that
Skalla-Grimr Kveldulfsson settled; he was one of the earliest Norwegians to sail to the newly discovered island. His son,
Egill Skallagrimsson is the subject of one of the most famous of Icelandic sagas, and Kjartan Olafsson, the hero of
Laxdaela saga is buried here.
Snorri Sturluson, the thirteenth century author, poet, and politician, married the priest's daughter here before moving to Reykholt. Today, the settlement at Borg consists of a nineteenth century church and the memorial Sonatorrek (Grief), by sculptor Asmundur Sveinsson, which stands in front and commemorates Egill and the poem he composed upon the loss of his sons.
