Wicklow
June 10, 2004

On Thursday, I joined a "Wild Wicklow Tour" bus heading South to County Wicklow. After a brief stop in Dun Laoghaire on the outskirts of Dublin, we went to the 7th-century monastery and cemetery at Glendalough ("Glen of two lakes"). The round tower is one of a few dozen in Ireland and also one of the best preserved. Nearby one of the lakes is the cave wherein St. Kevin spent his days in solitude after the monastery was founded by his followers. Next we headed back North through Sally Gap, a high and desolate place where the old turf-cutters made a living selling chunks of peat for burning. We stopped on the Guinness family's property and then finally came back into Dublin after an exciting day.
