The Icelandic Horse is ancient, dating from the arrival of the Vikings. The breed is a well-preserved version of the old European stock, and has been protected from interbreeding since its arrival. Although smaller than a modern European or American horse, the Icelandic horse is apparently a joy to ride, and retains the ability to tolt, a gait lost in other breeds. We stopped by the side of the road on the way to Thingvellr to greet a herd of tame horses which, like Icelandic sheep, are allowed to roam around the country freely in summer.
