We took a side trip one day to visit Chichen Itza, the ancient Mayan temple complex. The temple is massive, and the outbuildings are covered in impressive artistry. Still, the emphasis on death and human sacrifices is enough to give one pause. On the way back we took a refreshing dip in the cenote at Ikkil, one of the many underground lakes that dot the Yucatan.
