The second of my Cathedral trips was to
Winchester, the capital of England in the 10th and 11th centuries and the seat of
Alfred the Great.
Winchester Cathedral, begun in 1079, is one of the largest churches in England and the second longest in Europe. The nearby
Winchester College also has impressive grounds, including the ruins of
Wolvesey Castle, and is along the way to the Hospital of St. Cross, which itself boasts a beautiful Romanesque chapel.
